Manchu Wok Chef:
I was a chef. I was called production at Manchu Wok, so I worked under two other head chefs. We were located in Canada’s Wonderland actually, so we had a lot of pressure on us. Basically, I would be responsible for making large amounts of food in a very small time. I’d be making the chicken and then I’d bring it over to another station, marinate it, bring it over to another station and fry it while the head chefs would be making, cutting up the chicken and cutting up the lettuce, cutting up the tomatoes and whatnot.
How would you describe the application and interview process?
Manchu Wok Chef:
Because it was through Canada’s Wonderland, we had to use their application process. You apply online and you select which area, where you wanted to work for. I chose production like as a chef, as a cook. They assigned… They gave me the options of either I make funnel cakes, I make Pizza Pizza or I’m at Manchu Wok near the front gate. So, I chose Manchu Wok because that way I feel like it would give me more diverse experience and it’d give me… It would make me a veteran in the workforce when it comes to preparing food because of all the different varieties of food that they do offer. I feel like it would make me obtain more skills that I can use in the future.
They put me through a trial run. So they basically had me test out all the machines that they use. For example, the woks that they use and the utensils and all that. They taught me how to cut up the chicken, taught me how to prepare it, and they see if I could handle myself in a lot of pressure situations when there’s a lot of guests coming in and ordering food and there’s long lineups. Basically, the interview process was kind of like a trial run. After the Wonderland application, they put me through a trial run at Manchu Wok like an objective trial run.
What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Manchu Wok Chef:
Well, firstly, the interviewee is more concerned about how much experience I had, and then during the trial run, he would ask me questions about what if I were to do in this situation if this happened, or if that happened. If a customer brought food back to the kitchen that was not up to their qualitive standards, what would I do? How would I redeem them and how would I give them the best satisfaction possible? How would I improve my cooking? How would I improve my pace while remaining, producing quality food? They were more concerned about how I would handle myself in situations and if I’ve had past experience. And because I didn’t have past experience, they mainly were concerned about how I’d handle myself in big situations.
What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Manchu Wok Chef:
Basically your head chef, your first cook will tell you a lot of important instructions. I would take everything that he tells you into account and to do everything by the book for your first couple of weeks. After that, you can certainly adapt to the situations and the scenarios that will come to you. Other than that, I’d say stay safe, I guess. That’s very important because when you’re working in Manchu Wok, everything is very fast-paced and accidents do tend to happen because the woks are very open. Basically, I would say just stay safe. Listen to everything your head chef tells you to do as a fry cook.
