Interviewer:
Please describe your job title and primary duties.

The Home Depot Cashier:
So, at Home Depot I was a cashier. They put me at the contractors’ side of the store. So, I would work there in the mornings and the weekends as I went to school. They put me by the contractors’ side because I was the most vocal, I was very outgoing and all the contractors knew me after a while. And I started to make friends there. And you just got to be very open-minded because there’s different kind of people that walk in and out and just help them out as much as you can. At the same time, knowing that you’re only stationed at the cashier so you can only do so much.

Interviewer:
How would you describe the application and interview process?

The Home Depot Cashier:
So, I went through a couple of interviews. One of them was a two on one. So, two managers sat with me, they asked me about my past experiences, why I wanted to join Home Depot and I had to write down some goals that I wanted to project myself with the company.

Interviewer:
What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?

The Home Depot Cashier:
They gave me a scenario. A scenario like, “What would you do in this case, if someone’s trying to help you out or what have you done in your past work history that shows that you’re willing to help others and you’re charismatic and you’re outgoing?”

Interviewer:
What set you apart from other candidates?

The Home Depot Cashier:
I was just persistent. Even though they said, “We’ll call you.” I took the time out of my day and went back and followed up and said, “Hey, we had an interview, what’s going on with my application? Is there going to be a next interview? Or when is training going to start?” So, I got out of my way and didn’t wait for them to call me, I went to them. And that’s what they like, they saw that I was very persistent.

Interviewer:
What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?

The Home Depot Cashier:
Just make sure to remember that it’s a team environment. So, you’re working with other employees, associates that are of different ages, backgrounds and ethnicity. So, just be open-minded. Sometimes you have to know that maybe an associate of yours just got promoted or he got a wicked bonus and you have to say, “Okay, it’s their time to shine and now it’s not my time but I will have an opportunity in the future.” So, just be humble and open-mind.

Pretty much the parking lot guy. It was a big Home Depot. So just taking in the carts at the end of the night and helping people out if they need help with stuff. I was a general parking lot maintenance guy, didn’t really have a certain position.

Interviewer:
How would you describe the application and interview process?

Home Depot Parking Lot Attendant:
I actually dropped my resume off. And then I had done, he made… I talked to the guy right away. And then they called me back for another interview. And that went well, I guess, because they hired me.

Interviewer:
What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?

Home Depot Parking Lot Attendant:
I think the one he asked is, “Why do you want this job?” And I guess, “Where do you see yourself in five years?”

Interviewer:
What set you apart from other candidates?

Home Depot Parking Lot Attendant:
I think I’m just usually comfortable talking to people. I don’t really… I find it easy to talk to people. So when you’re relaxed and you’re just speaking fluidly, you’re not all nervous and tense when you’re talking, I think they like that because they can be comfortable working with you. And it’s just easy that you can talk to customers easily. Yeah.

What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?

Home Depot Parking Lot Attendant:
It’s if you go, you have to be comfortable talking with people, with customers, and just being relaxed about doing that. It’s a job. You’ll probably learn how to improve your customer service skills. So if you’re not used to that, it’ll help you with that. Or you should be good at that going to that job.
