At Harvey’s I worked in the back in the kitchen. So I made the burgers and everything. So what we had to do was we had to make the burgers neat, fresh and tidy. And that to be quick as well so the customers got their food fast and ready.

What was the work environment like?

It was fun. It was fast-paced, but you had to keep on top of what you are doing. They didn’t take laziness and you have to make sure your area was clean.

How would you describe the application and interview process?
Harvey’s Kitchen Associate:
Because in the summertime, I got hired in the summer because that’s when most of the universities people come back or they leave, so that’s when high school students or other people that wanted to like their first-time job, they can apply there. So it’d be like, I got the job quickly. Mostly everyone that applied got the job quick because it was open availabilities.

They asked, How can you represent this store or what can you bring to the store that will make it better? And they asked what do you do? Do you know about the store and everything? So I just suggest that you know about the store before you go in.

For your interview, come well dressed, I guess, and know your stuff and don’t stutter or shake or look around. Make sure you’re paying attention to the interviewer and congratulate them when you’re done and ask at the end if there’s any other things that concern you about my resume?

She just asked me some simple questions, and yeah, it wasn’t very long.

She asked me what kind of experience I’ve had, and Harvey’s was my first job. I remember, I was in grade 10. I was looking for a part-time job. So, she asked me that, and I told her that, “This is my first time.” She also asked me when I was available to work, obviously, I’m in school, what my goals were, how my grades are, things like that.

At Harvey’s, I was pretty much everything. So, I was a cashier, garnisher. I worked the grill and the fryers, and those were… I pretty much worked grill and fryers, most of the time.

Harvey’s Crew Member:
The application process, I had to fill out an application in store as well as give in my resume. And if we had any references, that was always important, too. My brother actually worked there. So, that kind of helped me get the job.

What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Harvey’s Crew Member:
They asked me questions like, what was my work experience, different volunteer experience that I took part in, how old I was. I guess that that was important to put me on either the fryers or the grill.

What set you apart from other candidates?
Harvey’s Crew Member:
Well, I guess I’ve always been a fan of cooking, so I guess that’s why they wanted to be on the grill, so much. I enjoy cooking. I enjoyed working in a fast-paced environment and I know, with fast food chains, that’s usually what it is, fast food. There’s peak hours like lunchtime and dinner time, things like that. And I was very comfortable working in those types of scenarios. So, I guess that’s what set me apart.

What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Harvey’s Crew Member:
The advice I’d give someone, it’s good to be well-rounded, not only, for example, working on the grill or whatever, but you also have to be able to work with money a cashier, working with customers, garnishing their burgers and such. And also be very flexible because things might change. And you also have to be very patient, especially patient and you have to be attentive, I guess, with rush hour, and also with customers that may not know what they want.
