It was fast paced some days, slow other days. It depended on the day, really and the time of the day.

How would you describe the application and interview process?

It was an online. First, you go online and you do, like a questionnaire and then after that, if you move forward, they’ll give you a call. You come in, you sit down and they ask you basic questions. It’s normally about 15 minutes, I’d say tops. 15, 20 minutes. Sometimes there’s, cause I worked there for a while, so I knew other people that were hired as well and sometimes it’d be a group interview. Sometimes it’d be by yourself. I had gone by myself, but I know people who had been in a group.

I think what was important was presentation, how you were dressed, and how you answered the questions, if you maintain eye contact, things like that.

Just the basics, really. It’s just about coming on time. When you move past the questionnaire process. Doing the questionnaire process, I’d say continue to apply. Don’t just do it once and think that’s enough. Just keep going and going and applying as many times as you can.

I was a sales associate at Giant Tiger. I was more in charge of rearranging products and working in the backroom, taking out products, heavy boxes and doing heavy lifting, stuff like that. Just making sure things in aisles were orderly kept, putting stuff in the frozen section and differentiating, like different items and stuff, putting them where they belong.

What was the work environment like?
Giant Tiger Sales Associate:
Giant Tiger, it’s a lot like really quiet. It was just a store, kind of in a corner of a plaza. Not many people came by. I usually worked on weekends. It was generally not too busy. You could probably find a Walmart or a No Frills that were like two or three times busier than Giant Tiger.

How would you describe the application and interview process?
Giant Tiger Sales Associate:
I just walked by the store one day. I saw a help wanted sign on it and I just went in. I handed in my resume and a few days later I got a call from a lady and she told me that they’re going to be holding a job interview for a group kind of thing. And I went in. I did a group interview and that was a pretty large one actually, but I did another smaller one. Then I did a third one, which was a solo one. After the third one, that’s when she told me that I’d be working for them.

What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
Giant Tiger Sales Associate: Work experience, my age, if I was able to do heavy lifting, any physical disabilities, any allergies because I’d be working sometimes with open food. If people opened it and then just put it back, I’d have to touch it. See if I had allergies. Just basically, if I had any physical disabilities. That was just the main stuff that she asked me about.

What sets you apart from other candidates?

Just well-spoken. It’s just communication. I think that’s the main thing with interviews. It’s just that you got to really show that you want the job. You got to be really determined. You got to stand out from other applicants that you may be facing to show that you’re ready to take that next step to be an employee at the store.

What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
Giant Tiger Sales Associate:
Don’t be afraid. Just working is working. You’re going to get your money at the end. You may learn a few things on the way, meet different people and just, don’t be afraid. It’s going to open you to a lot of new things.
