More about Giant Tiger
Giant Tiger stands as a large Canadian chain of discounts stores with more than 200 locations nationwide. The company serves as one of the largest retailers in the country and employs roughly 7,000 workers. The retail chain came about after founder Gordon Reid visited several American discount stores while working as a traveling salesman. Reid sought to capitalize on the lack of competition in the Canadian discount retail store industry and created the first Giant Tiger concept soon after.

The Canadian retail company operates as a discount department store retail chain. Giant Tiger customers encounter products and merchandise ranging from pet supplies and toys for children to clothing, fashion accessories, health and beauty items, groceries, and various home and garden supplies. Customers consistently return to Giant Tiger due to low price points and regular sales and promotions. Giant Tiger also partners with charitable organizations and sponsors community events, which lead to increased popularity and customer support.

The first Giant Tiger location opened in 1961. Following the success of early stores, the company began franchising in the late 1960s. By 1990, more than 50 stores operated under the Giant Tiger banner. Expansion into the Canadian province of Quebec introduced the store under different brand names: Tigre Geant and Chez Tante Marie. Giant Tiger opened a single U.S. location in 2004 in Potsdam, NY, but later closed the location.

Products and Services
Giant Tiger operates out of large department stores. Typical products sold at Giant Tiger locations include household goods, furniture, health and beauty products, clothing, pet supplies, and groceries. Giant Tiger customers may sign up for special promotions emailed on a regular basis.

A private company, Giant Tiger maintains corporate headquarters in Ottawa, ON, Canada. Collectively, Giant Tiger stores pull in more than $1.5 billion in annual sales. Giant Tiger also operates under the name GTExpress and Scott’s Discounts in Ontario. In 1987, the retailer launched a company-owned trucking fleet.
