Please describe your job title and primary duties.
So I was a cashier at Dollarama and my duties were basically just regular duties of a cashier. So just when customer comes by wanting to buy something, just distribute and take their money, that kind of stuff. And if the Dollarama store was running slow, sometimes I’d be out in the back, helping put away stuff or just rearrange stuff, making sure everything looks nice and orderly.
How would you describe the application and interview process?
Basically, well, one of my friends used to work there and he had a good relationship with the boss. And when he quit, he actually referred me to his boss. And then he told me that they’re going to be needing someone to replace me. So I went in, I gave my resume with the reference of my friend. And then they did an interview with me along with, they did two interviews. First, it was a group interview. So it was me and two other people. And then they did a solo interview with me. And then that’s when I got the job.
What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?
They asked for work experience, how old I was. It was a while ago. They asked my strengths and abilities, my weaknesses, and just general vague kind of questions like that. Just to get to know more information about me.
What set you apart from other candidates?
I think it was that I was really determined. I really needed a job and I was well-spoken as well. I was really confident, outspoken, I presented myself much more, I would say much better than the other applicants there. It’s all about presentation and communication.
What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?
I’d definitely say, “Don’t be afraid to work.” I think some people, they don’t really go out and seek jobs just because they feel like they’ll make a mistake and then get fired easily. When you get a job, they’re going to train you how to do the job. And if you make a mistake once or twice, it’s okay, but you should not be afraid to work, the money’s going to come to you if you work hard for it basically.
