History

Established in 1984, Bluenotes initially registered under the name Thrifty’s Inc. and operated retail outlets branded as Thrifty’s. American Eagle Outfitters, a fashion retailer based in the United States, acquired the Canadian company and converted Thrifty’s stores to the Bluenotes brand name in 2000. In 2004, American Eagle sold Bluenotes to the current parent company YM. Retaining the Thrifty’s Inc. name as the formal company title, the current moniker boasts a nationwide network of more than 120 stores across all 10 Canadian provinces.

How Does Bluenotes Work?

While blue jeans and denim form the foundation of the Bluenotes brand, the fashion retailer also offers extensive selections of hoodies, t-shirts, and other wardrobe-essentials. The full range of apparel and accessories allows the Canadian chain to function as a total lifestyle brand rather than strictly a specialty denim retailer. Designed with casual comfort and current trends in mind, available fashions appeal to teenagers and young adults of both genders. Stores, conveniently located in major malls and shopping centers across Canada, create contemporary fashion retail environments by playing popular music and hiring youthful employees.

Products and Services

Bluenotes specializes in denim and offers a varied assortment of jeans for boys and girls. Jeans available in stores feature a wide variety of colors, cuts and fits, prints, and washes. In addition to jeans, the chain maintains full range of t-shirts and tops, outerwear, sleepwear, and fashion accessories. The clothing store also sells dresses and footwear for girls. Typical apparel boasts casual, trendy designs ideal for teens and young adults. The fashion retailer accommodates online shoppers at the company website and ships merchandise internationally to the United States.

Financial

Parent company YM Inc. operates Bluenotes as a privately held subsidiary officially called Thrifty’s Inc. YM also owns fashion retailers Siblings, Sirens, Stitches, Suzy Shier, and Urban Planet. The sister companies combine with the denim retailer to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue each year. Subsidiaries of YM share corporate offices in Toronto, ON, Canada.

Interviewer:
Please describe your job title and primary duties.

Bluenotes Retail Associate:
At Bluenotes, I was first just a normal retail associate, folded t-shirts and stuff like that. And then I gradually moved up to being a key holder, helping out with cashier duties. And that was fun. Working in retail can be crazy at times because you’re always on your feet, but you always get a lot of cool clothes on discounts. And that was fun.

Interviewer:
What was the work environment like?

Bluenotes Retail Associate:
It was fun because you’re getting paid and you get to look at cool clothes, and put people in clothes themselves, and figure out what jeans look good on this person, and what would look better on this person. That was pretty cool. Giving people advice on how they look.

Interviewer:
How would you describe the application and interview process?

Bluenotes Retail Associate:
The process was very easy. I think it was a job fair that they were having that day. And I went. I was in the Eaton Center, just casually doing my own thing and realized that they were looking for people. So I went and filled out an application and had an on the spot interview. So, that was good.

Interviewer:
What questions did the interviewer ask during the job interview?

Bluenotes Retail Associate:
What are the specific questions they asked me was what type of music I like to listen to. And I thought that was interesting because I didn’t realize that having a musical taste help with retail, but luckily it did and it got me a job.

Interviewer:
What other advice would you give to a job seeker looking to gain employment?

Bluenotes Retail Associate:
Don’t try and be something that you’re not. Just come across as a natural individual. And you definitely have to have a love affair for jeans. You got to know what type of jeans you want to wear, what’s your favorite pair of jeans, and how you want your jeans to look on you. That sort of helps because the store is really about finding the perfect fit. And Bluenotes jeans are really good jeans.
